The islands of Lofoten are famous for their beautiful dramatic natural scenery with high mountains that plunge right into the sea, clear blue water and white sandy beaches. One of the best ways to experience this is on horseback.
Experienced guides will bring you along the coast, down white sandy beaches and on roads in the nature reserve that the Vikings in Lofoten originally used. You can also go on a more strenuous mountain climb and get fantastic views over the archipelago. On the longer trips, food is prepared over an open fire, or you will be given food at the goat farms we visit.
Short and long trips as well as multi-day trips are offered. There are trips for novices and for experienced riders who like to gallop. This is a lovely activity for families, groups of friends and companies, and you will be given a horse to suit your level of ability.
Icelandic horses are used because of their temperament, their unique ability on such terrain and also because their ancestors stem from the Viking Age and Norway. Riding an Icelandic horse through the Lofoten countryside is not just a way of getting a deeper insight into the history of the area; it is also a fantastic experience for the body and soul. Icelandic horses are renowned for their calm disposition and the comfortable way they trot, and «being one» with such a big, strong animal while riding through an amazing landscape is a really special feeling.
Icelandic horses are a strong breed of horse that suit most people, young or old. They are patient and sure-footed and are generally happy enough as long as they are with other horses and nice people.
